My mum was never Masterchef material and she did say she really wanted to find a pre-prepared Beef Wellington that she could have just shoved in the oven for half an hour.

No joy, so she had to start from scratch. And that was a challenge because cooking for one, as is nearly always the case after my Dad died, doesn’t usually involve, for a start, making pastry.

Anyway, she nailed it. She’s not very good at gravy, though. Best swerve that bit.

Anyway, we’ll take what we can get this year. It was good.
