star of wonder

We're on our way to the Co-op when I spot this bright spot in the sky (to the left of the TV aerial and just above the railing spike).  It's in the right part of the sky and not long after sunset (about 16.45GMT) which suggests it may be the alignment of Jupiter and Saturn.  (Best viewed large.)

We can just make out two objects with the naked eye, but there's no hope of that sort of resolution with the phone.

They'll appear closest on December 21st.  The last time that happened was 800 years ago.  This alignment may also be the source of the Christmas Star, some 2000 years ago.

Now we know where to look - and this is just round the corner from the house - we'll look again then, weather permitting.
