Lake Tennyson
Farmerboy decided we needed a wee break away from the farm, so we packed our bags and headed to St Arnaud, to do some four wheel driving through the Rainbow Station, St James Station and part of Molesworth Station, ending up at Hanmer Springs for the night.
It was about a four hour trip, and in places, especially the Rainbow Station part of the journey, it was real 4WD country. Last month they had a tremendous amount of rain fall, causing massive slips, and wash outs of the main road. While they had done a lot of work to the road, you really wouldn't like to tackle the journey in anything other than a 4WD vehicle.
The weather was fantastic - beautiful blue sky, with a very bare landscape, as shown in this photo.. We headed to Lake Tennyson for lunch, and today's photo show's one of the many photo's I took of the lake. The reflections were truely beautiful. There were many trout jumping in and out of the water - I'm not sure if you are allowed to fish out of this lake. This photo shows the other end of the lake. There were a few people there having a picnic lunch, along with several people parked up, camping for a few days.
We proceeded onto Hanmer Springs, a thermal resort nestled in the South Island high country. Hanmer is a beautiful, relaxing place. Have a look here to see the main road coming into Hanmer. You can go for a walk in the township, or visit the thermal pools, where the kids can also have fun. It is a beautiful place to go to in the winter - lovely and warm soaking in the pools with the steam rising around you, although very cold when you get out of the water! If you would like to find out more about Hanmer, have a look at its website.
