Karla
Today Karla and I went to see the Western Australian Art Gallery to see the exhibition Picturing New York: Photographs from the Museum of Modern Art and also to have a wander around Northbridge and the City to see what else is on offer during the festival of arts.
The weather was awful...40º and very humid but the Art Gallery was air conditioned and actually felt quite cold when we first entered, so it was a good place to spend a few hours. We both enjoyed the exhibition and also taking photos of each other. I was quite surprised that the gallery allowed photos (no flash) as so many galleries don't permit cameras in.
After the gallery visit we went for a wander around Northbridge and checked out some small galleries and stopped at a Japanese cafe for lunch (teriyaki beef which was extremely good value at $7.50). This photo was taken in the cafe.
Later we happened to stumble upon an interesting exhibition in the GPO...It was an installation where grains of rice were used to represent populations of people. The largest pile was the population of the world in 1770. There were piles for groups like number of Aboriginals in Australia in 1770 compared to today (pleased to see it has increased), number of immigrants living in Australia compared to number of Australians living abroad (very similar), and some fun ones like a single grain on a piece of A4 paper (Merv Hughes, Julia Gillard, Condelezza Rice....people considered by themselves and some others as important but they become insignificant when viewed as one grain of rice). There would have been at least 50 different piles and they appear like pyramids from a distance. As it was getting late we only had a short time to peruse the exhibition and I plan to return again... perhaps it will be a future blip.
I don't think this is a particularly good portrait of Karla as it doesn't capture the lively character that she is...but I wanted to post one of her here as she was responsible for the lovely day I had today. Thanks Karla...you rock.
