There are several roads in town which were probably built with just a house name to identify individual properties.

The arrival of Roland Hill's penny postage in 1840 generated a massive increase in postal items to be delivered. Even in the early days, with small towns and villages, a name and a road were usually sufficient to get your letter delivered. By the late 1880s numbers, rather than names, were becoming the new 'normal'

A large garden (presumably No 2?) has, at some point, been sold off and a new house built on the plot. Just love how the owners, rather than going for 2B, have gone for 2½.
