History

Lochgelly brickworks, ironworks, colliery.

According to The Fife Herald, 2nd November 1871,
In Lochgelly, around 120 men were employed in mining coal (40 tons a day) and ironstone (14 tons a day)
Additional iron ore was brought in by rail and 82 men were employed producing iron from 4 blast furnaces (2 in use) to cast around 40 tons of pig-iron a day which was then carried away by rail.
There was also an adjoining brickworks and sawmill.

This brick found on a local beach is obviously a product of that brickworks (about 6 miles inland).
