I’ve been reading this again, for the first time since I was a student many years ago. It was written in 1837 and what is most striking is his little has actually changed since the time of Dickens. I believe the author is a popular choice among senior Conservative ministers, when asked who Britain’s greatest writers may be. Someone needs to tell them he wasn’t writing an aspirational vision of society for them to build nearly 200 years on....
