A big river now
Last year I searched out what is thought to be the source of the River Lune. I had intended following it, but never got any further. Today we jumped ahead and got to the place where the Lune is a big grown up river and where its most important crossing point is. Kirkby Lonsdale is somewhere we have always tried to ignore, as we go past it on the A65 into Yorkshire. We certainly don’t go near the famous Devil’s Bridge because it is invariably thronging with people and motorcyclists.
Today it was fairly quiet. Just a few people walking dogs. We had seen a forecast for some good weather but this never really materialised and we had some hazy sunshine and lots of cloud. So the photographs I wanted of the wonderful medieval bridge were not good. I will return on a clearer day.
We walked along the lovely riverside path to the church and this is the River Lune near to the church. It is not quite Ruskin’s View as I did not climb the steep Radical Steps (Gordon did), but it shows what a fine river the Lune has become.
We got sandwiches in Booths and returned to Sedbergh by the back roads, following the river and the old railway line. A lovely drive. And I did like the Alpacas who were in the field close to where we parked to have lunch.
