I'm intending to post each day a verse from John Clare's December part of his long " A Shepherds Calendar "  . The wood engraving is by David Gentleman.

Christmas is come to every hearth
Makes room to give hime welcome now
Een want will dry its tears in mirth
And crown him with a holly bough
Tho tramping neath a winters sky
Oer snow track paths and ryhmey stiles
The housewife sets her spinning by
And bid him welcome wi her smiles.
