Pūkeko...

…………......…….Chick



This fluffy chick looks so comical and cute with its long legs and huge feet. One day its feathers will change to deep blue, his beak will be bright red and he will grow into his feet and legs.

The Pukeko, a native bird of NZ is thought to have landed here around a thousand years ago from Australia.  These birds are abundant and widespread in NZ.

Their environment must be clear fast flowing rivers, now mostly confined to high altitude rivers in the North and South Islands of NZ - think white water and rapids. Even the ducklings begin navigating rapids as soon as they hatch.
