Tongland Abbey Dig

Today's the day …………………… to ponder

It was the last day of actual digging on the Tongland Abbey archaeological site. Next week, it will be a case of covering the trenches with the special webbing membrane, ready for the digger to come and fill all the earth back in.

This is the trench that I have spent most of the summer months working in.  Behind Rodger in the blue overall, you can see the water channel that was found, disappearing off in either direction.  Quite unexpectedly though, hints of a new wall came to light at this end of the trench.  And sure enough, on excavating further back into the side of the trench, the wall magically took shape.  

It's an exciting find - but it throws up more questions than answers.  Is it part of another building - and if so, how does that fit into the layout of the Abbey that has already been found?  Certainly, for now, it's just going to remain a tantalising bit of evidence to be resolved in the future...………………..
