Waiting

I often see these two locals when I'm out and about, and it's almost always at a bus stop. Not necessarily the same bus stop, but a bus stop.

Newtown in the 20th century was a centre for a range of industries and commerce employing mainly blue collar workers. It was considered a slum area. After WW2 it attracted many immigrants because of proximity to employment and low rents. A large proportion of the immigrants were from Greece.

The two people in the photo are of Greek origin and may have been living in Newtown for almost all their lives. There aren't many people left who have lived here for so long. Since around the 1970s, the suburb has become gentrified and gradually the likes of us have moved in. We love the closeness to the city and there's plenty of diversity amongst the residents.
