Saving The Trees...

In the Moss Side/Whalley Range district of Manchester an ongoing protest to save the trees in Alexandra Park has been staged over the past few weeks. Protesters began occupying Alexandra Park over fears 400 trees would be felled as part of the huge £5.5m project redevelopment by Manchester City Council to return the park to the way it is supposed to have looked in Victorian times. Work was temporarily halted when protesters climbed and chained themselves to the trees, resulting in the Council changing its original plan reducing the amount of trees to be removed. More than 4,000 people have signed an online petition opposing the felling of trees in the project, which received £2.2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Opinions are divided on the subject but for now the protesters remain on-site.
