Not what I was looking for
We saw a good forecast and decided to go in search of a few packhorse bridges - as you do! However, things changed - as they do.
We set off through Borrowdale, calling in at Grange and wondering at being able to park. It's a lovely bridge, a 19th century double arched continuous bridge over the River Derwent. It is Grade II listed, but it is not technically a packhorse bridge. So much for my plan! However we did walk along the river briefly and I liked this photo, even if it was still whilst there was cloud cover - you can just see the sun beginning to break through. There is also a 'roche moutonée', which is just about all I remember from Geography O level and to which Gordon has brought groups of students in the past.
Then things went a bit awry - Gordon wanted to go over Honister whilst there was so little on the road and he walked from the mine car park. We avoided Buttermere and Crummock Water, after seeing all the cars in the car parks and chose a quiet place to have our sandwiches. That's when the sun came out properly and we headed for the sea.
We arrived in Silloth, after a detour because the road was closed and had a lovely walk along by the sea. We found the Big Fella which Marian blipped a few days ago. I was taken with the dog, eyes fixed on the ball at the Big Fella's feet.
So a lot of really nice sunny views, but I still like the bridge, even if it wasn't what I was looking for and the light was poor.
