Before you plant this, be advised that it is a big hearty thing. The hummingbirds love it and are buzzing around there first thing in the morning when I go out to get the paper.
We planted out another vegetable bed: 6-paks of romanesco (the bright green fractal plant), bok choi and Japanese (edible) chrysanthemum. The last one was an impulse buy. Apparently you can cook it or eat it in salad, so we thought we'd give it a try. Anybody know this plant? We covered the bed with a ratty arrangement of screens to keep out the birds and squirrels and whatever comes at night to leave big seedy poops. The slapdash mess of sticks and frames offends my sense of order, but I'll try anything at this point to get the plants to where they can survive on their own.
Had a nice lunch with son and granddaughter; it's still warm enough to be outside so we felt safe. He has been grandly reminded of his mortality by the car accident and is still pretty traumatized. It was just good to spend time with them.
