Shocklach
Today's walk started, and finished, at the tiny St Edith's church just outside the village of Shocklach in Cheshire. The church stands on its own surrounded by beautiful countryside and views over the River Dee.
During plague times the stench from the graveyard was so great that the villagers all moved away. The cross just inside the churchgate has 4 fist size indentations on the top. Lots of transactions would take place around the cross. The indentations would be filled with vinegar and coins dropped in to disinfect them. Something we could re-introduce if payment by card is not possible?
Another unusual feature of this little church is a small stable. The date on the lintel was 1700. This was built to accommodate the horses of the wealthy parishoners who would have to ride out from the village to church.
