The Bench
Every day is somewhat different but a lot of the classics are on the table here and might be interesting if you don’t see it every day. This is a small set up for mounting flies into small syringe parts so they can be imaged under a fluorescent microscope where we aim to understand how signals from the brain go to the muscles!
- Big insulated box for ice (this anesthetizes fruit flies, and keeps chemicals cool)
- Tube of genetically modified flies (most brain research starts here with these annoying teeny ones that hover around mouldy fruit), these ones were injected as embryos with something that allows us to see their muscles contracting with a fluorescent protein
- Petri dish of glass capillaries pulled with a laser so the tips are really really small 1micrometer needle head!
- Messy lab background that you can get creative, wonder around in and go hmm maybe this part would be useful for me!!!
