Time Ball at Deal

It was there to give a time to ships  awaiting departure with favourable winds out at sea in what was then called The Roads.  Every day at 1300 hours the ball would drop, triggered by a signal sent by telegraph wire from the Observatory at Greenwich. Ships could then set their chronometers accurately by Greenwich meantime. It's now a museum. Information courtesy of my husband.
