Liverpool Landing Stage

I'm not really sure if this structure is officially called "The Landing Stage"? But that's what we've always called it and anyone of my generation will surely remember it. Probably not this very one - I think it's been replaced a couple of times, in fact, quite recently it did SINK.

As a child I was fascinated by the fact that the ferry boats would tie-up to this huge floating stage. It was held on to the quay by a couple of these huge gantry type constructions. How could something this big - FLOAT?

If the tide was out, as it is in this picture, then you would walk DOWN to the ferries but by the time you came back, the tide could have come in and you wouldn't be walking UP it was LEVEL!

I was at the Pier Head booking a ferry cruise to Manchester - not quite as exotic as other cruises I've been on (since those heady days when a floating stage fascinated me) - so I took a few pictures but chose this - not because it was the best, but because it evokes so many memories.
