DYKE . . . NO DYKE
On the bike ride today, long shorts and warm clothing, this picture. It may look just like a small dyke . . . but this is the impressive River Hertford. The Hertford was dug by hand during the Industrial Revolution.
The Hertford starts close to Muston, near Filey, 1.2 miles from the North Sea and flows westwards for 9.9 miles into the River Derwent near Malton. However, there is more to tell.
First, Star Carr, a Mesolithic archaeological site, lies close to the river. Star Carr was on the edge of a nine-thousand year old Stone Age wetland known a Lake Flixton.
Second, it is a 'backward-flowing river' because it flows away from the sea !
Stay safe and smile !
