Bonfire - The Chestnut Gentleman

I first saw this book when fellow Blipper W and I visited the Cloth Hall in Ypres on a trip to see some of the First World War cemeteries. I knew I should have bought it at the time but then had trouble finding a copy. However, I recently found a source - and it arrived yesterday!

Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae was a Canadian physician who fought in World War 1 where he wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields". Alexis Helmer his close friend, was killed during the Second Battle of Ypres on 2 May 1915. McCrae performed the burial service himself, at which time he noted how poppies grew quickly around the graves of those who died. The next day he composed the poem.

Bonfire The Chestnut Gentleman tells John McCrae's story of WW1 through the eyes of his war horse, Bonfire. Have read the first couple of chapters and it's very engaging.
