Square; Sheriffhall Tower

(Continuing the theme of mathematical shapes in buildings)

Built about 400 years ago this square tower at Sheriffhall was the stair tower of the former Sheriffhall House. In 1830 the house was demolished because of mining beneath, so leaving the tower which was then converted into a dovecot with access via an entrance in the pyramidal slated roof to 850 nesting boxes.

It was difficult to get a good picture without the wires because the local footpath/cycleway was closed last Friday so that work could begin there on the proposed Waverley railway line.
