What can you see John?
On the city walls is a statue leaning forward gazing into what used to be a fashionable, elegant suburb in the first half of the 19th century. John le Flemyng was MP in 1298, 1306, 1313 and 1314-15, and later as well as serving as Mayor in 1319; so I doubt he saw anything quite so fine. Now blocking his view is West Quay shopping centre.
There is a reference to John le Fleming being prosecuted saying he "had despoiled a ship of its gear and boat". Sounds about right for public office.
Apparently Jane Austen lived near where the statue is now with her family between 1807 and 1809. I wonder if there is a town in Hampshire she didn't live.
Rosie liked this one best.
