Carlingwark Loch

Today's the day …………………………. to share knowledge

This is Carlingwark Loch, a small freshwater loch to the south of Castle Douglas - and here are a few things that I learnt about it - courtesy of Mr Google.

From 1765 until 1840, there was a 1.5 mile canal which ran between the loch and the River Dee. Its main purpose was to allow flat-bottomed boats to transport shell-marl to farms along the route.

In 2009, an aerating fountain was installed at a cost of £10,000 to try to prevent the build-up of blue-green algae. However, further research revealed that because the loch was relatively shallow, the fountain was pretty ineffective and its use was discontinued. Barley straw, added twice a year, has since been used very successfully.

The loch and the land around it, was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 2012 because of its varied birdlife and grassland.

And now you know as much about it as I do ……………………..!
