A day indoors
Today was the day for the insurance company's contractors to replace the patio doors and the kitchen windows that burglars damaged, back in August. It had all been temporarily secured since then, while we waited for an available date.
The workmen did a brilliant job: all done and dusted (literally) by early afternoon. A relief to have it all sorted out, especially as a renewed lockdown now seems inevitable.
Richard and I therefore needed to stay in today; no hardship for me, as I'm still not feeling well and have no desire to go out. I've been dutifully filling in the Covid ZOE study app each day for months (info here, for any readers in the UK who don't already know about this valuable initiative: https://covid.joinzoe.com/)
So I routinely log any symptoms, including those of the last couple of days. These feel to me like an ordinary head cold - congestion, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue etc.
The app prompts you to get a Covid test if it picks up a relevant pattern of symptoms. I got the prompt yesterday, & ordered the kit online. It arrived this morning, I did the swab test and posted it straight back. This will be the 3rd one I've done, and each time the result has come back very quickly. I'm hoping it'll be as quick this time, despite everything that we're hearing about the huge rise in cases and the inevitable added pressure on all health services. Because we're looking after all 3 grandchildren regularly still, there are avenues for exposure via school and nursery etc, so I am grateful for the opportunity of a test.
Today's news pages state that Johnson is likely to announce new lockdown measures of some kind imminently. If he does indeed take expert advice at last, It will be over a month later than it should have been. As a family, we would gladly put up with a clear period of lockdown, for the sake of interrupting this terrifying upsurge in Covid numbers. So long as everyone actually sticks to it, not least government ministers and their advisers...
