Turnip lanterns.

This year's turnip lantern next to last year's one dried out. When I was a wee boy we lived in a village not far from where I am now and all the kids in the village would find the biggest turnip we could in a field on the edge of the village. There were no streetlights yet, and the guisers going door to door light by candles in the turnip lanterns was very atmospheric.
