Cathcart Cemetery
A routine food shopping morning followed by a swimming session early in the afternoon which proved, on this occasion, to be a quiet time. I managed to do an extra two lengths before my 30 minutes was up, although I don’t think anyone would have minded if I had stayed in longer.
It had been my intention to leave the car at the gym and walk to Linn Park, I did that eventually but not before exploring some of Cathcart Cemetery, a bit of a misnomer because it falls outwith the Cathcart area of Glasgow city. It is a fascinating place, a complex network of paths, muddy and quite overgrown, and impressive rows of monuments. Currently there is a crowd funding campaign to restore the stone cross marking the grave of Jessie MacLachlan who died in 1916. Jessie was a singer and ambassador for Gaelic hugely admired by, among others, Queen Victoria and Tsar Nicholas. I had hoped to find it and blip, I failed.
I have subsequently found the Facebook page for the Friends of Cathcart Cemetery who have created a google map of the notable lairs including Jessie MacLachlan so that’s a task for another day.
