Machinery

At the back of this shed is stored some of the agricultural machinery for use on the crofts. The big machine to the left, with the yellow 'skirt' is the grass-mower. This is followed by the Haybob, which turns the cut grass (you can just see some of the tines popping up behind the mower. At the back (right) is the machine that makes the big bales and wraps them. Usually we make haylage - half-way between hay (dried grass) and silage (wrapped and sealed while the grass is still moist). The advantage of this is that we don't need several days of perfectly dry weather to ensure good hay, but the haylage is not quite a pervasively strongly smelling and wet when it comes to opening the bales and feeding it to the livestock over the winter.
