Shop local

There are only six sellers in our small weekly market these days:  Phil the fishmonger, 2  butchers/cheese merchants,  Mr Batra with his Syrian goods, a baker and  the fruit&veg stall run by Keith and Helen.

They all travel some way to bring their goods even though the market  is hardly buzzing. A lot of local people never use it and seem to believe it's more expensive than a supermarket.

This lot came to a fiver - £5. Even I was surprised. The PSP and the root veg are fresh and grown locally. The other items come from the wholesaler and are probably sold off cheaply as 'close to date'. This doesn't bother me I'm keen on reducing food waste and there's nothing wrong with any of it. You can inspect it and pick what you want. The pomegranate had a small patch of brown on top but the inside was fine.

Here in Wales we're about to enter a 14 day "fire-break"  lockdown  in response to a sharp rise Covid-19 cases. Shopping locally is all the more important to keep small businesses and markets afloat.
Is your supermarket shop really necessary?
