WILLY HOWE
T and I made a grand discovery on our bike ride today. This is Willie Howe (or Willy Howe), a massive Neolithic round mound or barrow that stands on the northern edge of a small low spur of land in the Great Wolds Valley. It is the largest barrow on the Yorkshire Wolds. English Heritage record its height as 15 metres, with a diameter of 50 metres from north to south and 40 metres east to west.
This mound has been dug into many times in the search for buried treasures. Victorian Antiquarian investigations, the last in 1887, have failed to discover any remains or artefacts. It is possible that this very large mass of chalk stones was thrown up merely to commemorate, and not to contain the body of ‘some great personage' . . . but then I am still alive.
To prove it, beware the extra, shorts still in control.
Stay safe all !
