Red River Gorge
Wednesday
We have come away to Kentucky for another overnight getaway, making the most of a couple of really warm, mainly sunny days, before the temperatures cool off next week. It also an early birthday celebration for me as it is my birthday on Friday, but the weather forecast was better for Wednesday and Thursday, rather than Thursday and Friday. Also, we have handbells tomorrow evening, so this way we can get back in time for that, rather than missing it. We have come to Red River Gorge several times, and often around my birthday, as it is a wonderful place to see the autumn colours. Today we did Auxier Ridge trail, passing Haystack Rock (see extra) and Courthouse Rock, then going down into the valley and following a stream for a while, before climbing up the other side up to Double Arch, and then back along an old forestry road. The colours were glorious fro the first part of our walk, unfortunately more clouds moved in as the afternoon progressed, and without the sun, the colours didn’t “pop” quite so much. We are staying the night in Lexington, and tomorrow we plan to do a driving tour past some of the big horse farms.
