Myrtle

One of the plant cuttings for sale at Elford Walled Garden was a pretty little myrtle.

Obviously, I’ve heard of the plant (and as a name) but I knew nothing about it. And I’m naturally curious.

I bought this pretty little sprig and it’s settling nicely in a fairly spacious tub.

I googled it. An interesting range of links, myths and traditions.

It was sacred to Aphrodite and Demeter.

It’s been traditional in wedding bouquets, and the descendants of a sprig from Queen Victoria’s bouquet have been included in royal wedding bouquets ever since.

It also has links with Beltane (May Day).

Meanwhile, this little cutting is enjoying a short burst of sunshine in my garden.
