:: Morning cup of joe ::

Do you know why Americans use the phrase a ‘cup of joe’ when talking about their coffee?

It is believed to originate from WW1 when Josephus Daniels, secretary to the Navy under president Woodrow Wilson imposed stricter moral standards on naval life.

One of the changes was banning alcohol.
As a substitute drinking coffee was encouraged which obviously was not popular and “a cup of Joseph Daniels“ was used as an insult by the sailors. This became shortened to the phrase now used.
Not sure how accurate this is but it sheds some light on the phrase.
