Growing old disgracefully

By GOD

For years I have heard folks speak of that most traditional of Glasgow institutions, The Buttery, but I had never been there until today. It was once a pub called the Shandon Belles, part of a tenement building in what was until the second world war almost a village within the city withits own unique identity - Anderston. In the post war era the population shrank from over 30,000 to less than 10,000 and the community was cut in half by the the M8 motorway. This corner tenement remained when almost everything else became concrete, - many of its furnishings being salvaged from the local church which was demolished

This isn't a restaurant review but I do want to say I was simply bowled over by the wonderful staff and their unobtrusive but extremely competent support for our friend who has a disability and who became unwell while we were there. Top marks to the Buttery. Oh, and the spicy bean stew was excellent too - tho' I'm still not sure why it had a poached egg on top.

Later a wee trip to Largs with another pal and gentle sortie up the hill to look at the stars.
