It is actually Mars a day past opposition. As the planet orbits the Sun, the Earth, closer in to the Sun catches up with Mars. Then for a brief moment the Sun, the Earth and Mars are in a direct line. At this point Mars appears at its brightest. This happens with all of the planets beyond Earth's orbit.
This is a single phone shot through my telescope. I have also taken video which I will process in due course and hopefully get a better image.
Even on this one though, the southern polar cap is visible as a bright spot at the 'bottom' of Mars.
