October to Ostern (Easter) the commonly quoted rule for winter tyres. My new car came complete with both winter & summer tyres that should last at least as long as I still have her. But as she's been sitting on the garage forecourt for many months, she has her winter shoes on. So time for a change.

PS German law requires "appropriate" tyres to suit the conditions. So if it snows in July, and it has indeed done so locally about two years ago with numerous accidents, then you can be prosecuted should you hinder traffic or cause an accident.
