Unrelenting
During this visit to the homeland, Han and I agreed to meet up somewhere in the vicinity of North Shropshire, equidistant between where she lives and where my parents live. We opted for Market Drayton, scene of regular childhood visits to Kwik Save, where we hoped to stroll the canal towpaths and soak up the town’s rich cultural history as the home of gingerbread. The weather was forecast to be shocking, and was indeed abysmal on the day, so we had to revise our outdoors plan. Hannah was upset with herself for suggesting we shelter indoors at a garden centre, but it was a fair option in the circumstances.
In the end, we exhausted available establishments: a café, a pub, a farm shop café and a farm shop shop. The rain cast a pall of misery over everything as it was so unrelenting.
In the evening my parents dished up cottage pie and leftover apple crumble. Excellent rainy autumn fodder.
