First ducklings

My iphone and I couldn’t get a good shot, but I wanted to record the first duckling sighting of the season.
 
Our ducks don’t do yellow, they start off brown. Not quite so pretty, but perhaps safer as they are less visible.
 
This father duck seemed quite placid, though hyper vigilant. In the past I have been charged by a male duck protecting his ducklings. That would have been courageous enough if I had been on foot, but I was driving a Landcruiser at the time.
 
We will watch this brood over the next few days. Sadly, they will almost certainly diminish in number. They face so many perils – foxes, cats, big birds, cars… We hope some of them will survive.
