The Emigrants Statue at Helmsdale
I've been fascinated and horrified about the Scottish Clearance History for about 3 years now. This tour has massively contributed to making that more real in terms of scale, landscape, and just the unbelievable injustice and hardship. This statue commemorates the thousands that were evicted, starved, and left homeless by the greedy subhuman attitudes of the wealthy English landowners to the native Scottish crofters. Sheep were more valuable than people. This was the first point Scottish fled to Canada on ships that were not much better than slave trading vessels ....100s died...mostly childten...Very sobering....and we still have a government today that wants a " hostile environment " for refugees. How shaming.
