1 mile to Shap

This is one of the few road markers on the A6 that still exist. Made around 1825 by T. Winder's Gatebeck foundry, there were originally about 36 of them and they were placed at mile intervals along what was then the Heron Syke Turnpike road through Westmorland, between Burton-in-Kendal, on the Lancashire boundary and Eamont Bridge on the Cumberland boundary. A few of them around Shap have been found and renovated and placed in the correct positions. We found this one. 

We had been for a birthday lunch at The Bridge, Kirkby Thore. We had planned to go to a Côte Brasserie in Harrogate, until the bad weather forecast put us off. Our wonderful daughters gave me some vouchers, thinking I might like some French food as I couldn't spend my birthday in France as I have done in recent years. Last year we went on a day ferry trip to Calais and ate in my very favourite restaurant . . . imagine! 

Anyway, it was a lovely lunch and we will spend the vouchers soon. We have a family Zoom meeting in a few minutes, so that will be great.
