In a hole in the ground . . .
We had not intended going on a Hobbiton Tour on our way from Lake Taupo to Auckland. Using the usual reasons: over-priced, a gimmick, we don't like guided tours, we won't have time, the tours will be all booked up - we dismissed the idea.
So why then did we found ourselves taking a detour to Matamata (Hobbit centre of the world)? Why then did we find ourselves going into the Visitor Centre - 'just to find out'?
- Is there a chance of a tour?
- Next one's at 11.45.
- OK
So half an hour later we were on a bus making its way to the Hobbiton Movie Set. How did that happen!!
Verdict
Fantastic!
The film set for Hobbiton, in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, was saved, has been completely rebuilt and is now lovingly maintained in all its detail. It's a joy to walk round the extensive farmland that was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth. The guides are so knowledgeable about all aspects of the filming, answering every question. And the tour ends at The Green Dragon Inn, with a mug of ale or ginger beer.
So here is . . . a hole in the ground . . . one of many delightful hobbit homes here in Hobbiton.
We are now at Orewa, a resort north of Auckland. We drive up to the Bay of Islands tomorrow.
