Small railway toy
The Southern Highlands has a history of iron, coal and shale oil mining. Fitzroy Iron Works at Mittagong, established in 1848, was Australia’s first commercial iron works. It required cheap local supplies of coal, and some 23 coal mines have operated in the area. None of these is currently operational.
This unidentified little railway car sits outside the Berrima District Museum. Presumably it ran on one of the private railways and tramlines that were built to convey coal and shale from the mines to the standard gauge main railway line.
More recently coal mining has become intensely controversial in the Highlands. Hume Coal is attempting to obtain approval for a new coal mine near Berrima, a project fiercely resisted by local residents (extra).
