Alford windmill is permanently closed. Its sails lie scattered and broken in an orchard where the trees hang heavy with unpicked apples and pears.

Sandilands is a sorry sight. The golf course and clubhouse have been abandoned. The Fat Seagull restaurant and shop are dark and the building is up for sale.

The North Sea Observatory at Chapel St Leonards is a beacon in the gloom. We stopped for lunch
