First Day

It was nice to be able to get outside for the first time in almost a week. I didn’t have much at the house that I could actually eat, so I started out the day at the deli for breakfast. I managed to eat most of a scrambled egg and half of an English muffin.

As I was sitting at the picnic table, my friends Barb and Joe came out of the deli. You’d never know they were in their 90s. Barbara is a very kind person and I could relay several examples of her kindness towards me. Jo has Parkinson’s disease and is in a wheelchair. He’s always been one of my favorite people. She talks almost as much as I do, but I know she needs someone, so I try not to interrupt – just let her talk. When she went over to get the car, I did my best to have a conversation with Joe. When I asked him how he was doing, softly and haltingly, said he was getting worse. Seeing him like that makes me sad but knowing that Barb is with him is a comfort.
