Preying Mantis
I have some neighbors who moved it a few months before the pandemic. They were going to get married but called it off. I encouraged them to do it anyway, but do it small, and told them about our ceremony in Karen’s parents’ backyard. I offered to do a shoot, but they got married at their parent’s house, in Virginia, and at the time it seemed so very far away. So I offered to practice on them and give them beautiful pictures NOT of their wedding. They accepted, but I never saw the email...
Until Saturday when, so desperate for someone to practice on, I decided to ask again, and found the email where she said yes.
I ran into them in the park and recognized them despite their wearing masks and we arranged a date. They are psyched about trying experimental, dramatic, “contemporary” photos.
As they were leaving a preying mantis jumped on his handlebars. We discussed it and photographed it and then the preying mantis climbed onto my cell phone, up my arm, up my shoulder, and up my head. We were a little nervous that it might be a female and might confuse me for a male preying mantis....
I seem to have lived through it.
And we’re going to pretend this counts as a toy for today’s picture.
