Windows on the past

The colours and textures, the bustling activity of places like Hill End, are still very present. This original store is being carefully maintained as the metal strip additions show. Apple trees, maybe a century old, were in blossom when we were there, and although there is only one hotel remaing from the extraordinary number there at the peak, you get the sense that the spirit of the past is nearer than you might expect.
