Stepping out on Wansted Flats ....
Wanstead Flats make up the southernmost part of Epping Forest. The area was formerly known as the Lower Forest and commoners had ‘rights of turbary’ here, which meant that they could dig peat for fuel. The Flats also, at various times;
Hosted an annual market for cattle from Wales, Scotland and the north of England
Hosted annual Easter pleasure fairs
Was the source of legal battles between commoners and landowners, preventing the gentry from taking over the Flats ... yipeeeeee!
A police hub for the 2012 Olympic Games
A temporary mortuary for victims of COVID
Home to football pitches
A fishing site
Home to Model Yacht Pond
Home for German prisoners of war
The site of a weekly parkrun event
And it’s a great place to wander.
