The Mayflower

Plymouth has been celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower ‘s sailing to America.
However this little old harbour in Newlyn was it’s last port of call.
It called here to pickup fresh water, as Plymouth was racked by a cholera outbreak at the time, and their water was at risk of spreading cholera infection.
It was headed for Virginia, but instead arrived off Cape Cod, founding their new settlement of Plymouth near by.
There is an area in West Virginia called Newlyn.
( All this may be disputed by some, but not the people of Newlyn)

We had called here to buy more fish, but first visited Penlee House to see the Newlyn School Interiors Exhibition.
This included paintings by Walter Langley, Stanhope Forbes, among others.
Famous for painting “ en Plein air” they also found inspiration from local homes, sail lofts, and schools.
They give an insight into the living conditions of Victorian Newlyn.
What an interesting and enjoyable collection of paintings, many which are in private hands.
We had booked a slot online. The system worked well, but there has to be a one way system these days, which means you can’t go back and look at a particular painting for a second time.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Penlee is only a small gallery, but one which we always enjoy as the exhibitions and displays are all connected with the local area.

The weather has certainly changed today.
Temp. down to 9C! Rain showers, but we managed to avoid them.
Now the wind has got up. Gales forecast, and the Scillonian crossing to the Isles of Scilly has been cancelled. We also noticed that a lot of the fishing boats were moored up in the harbour.
Still we can’t grumble after the fabulous weather we have had up to now.
