Stepping-stones Hide

Today's the day …………………….. to miss the boat

This was the view today from the Stepping-stones Hide in the NTS Threave Castle Estate Nature Reserve.  It was a bit late in the day to see anything much in the River Dee but normally it might have been possible to catch sight of goosanders, red-breasted mergansers, shovellers - not to mention a kingfisher or two.

The reserve covers an area of 1500 acres to the west of Castle Douglas and comprises woodland, farmland - and wetland which supports a range of rare plants, breeding birds and an abundance of insects and other animals.  Threave became Scotland’s first Bat Reserve in 2010 and has had breeding ospreys since 2009, with an osprey viewing platform.

I was too late for the ospreys as well.  Note to self - must visit sooner next year …………………!
