A pair of Coppers
More Small Coppers in double figures, this time up on the Ashdown Forest. I came upon this pair with early morning sun backlighting them. The male is on the left and the female is on the right. They are exhibiting an interesting aspect of their behaviour which I had read about but not witnessed before. The male had intercepted the female in flight but it was a female that had already mated. She then dropped into the grass and, with the male following (plus me and the spaniel) she beats her wings very rapidly (you can see this in the photograph) while crawling away. This cycle of flight and crawling happened repeatedly for perhaps five minutes. Eventually the male lost interest and flew off.
